CGL completes work on 'The Hut’
Work has completed on site for Child Graddon Lewis’s new building The Hut – a new, two-storey modern building designed to suit a variety of uses by local school and community groups for St Luke’s & Christ Church in Chelsea. The project undertaken by Martin’s Properties replaces an existing single-storey community and church hall facility which had fallen into a state of disrepair. The new building was inspired by the concept of a ‘hut’ with a prominent over-sailing pitched copper-effect roof sheltering the accommodation beneath.
Child Graddon Lewis were appointed to design a scheme on a tight and strict budget to meet the requirements of a numbers of different users and local community groups including a nursery. Internally, the building consists of meeting spaces, WCs, kitchens, storage and office space. The first floor has been manipulated to reduce the impact of the building on the neighbouring properties and a protected tree, and is designed to appear to float above the boundary wall to provide the users with a notion of security and privacy, essential for the potentially vulnerable occupants.
