Child Graddon Lewis joins Gingerbread City 2024

Well done to Lizzie and Elizabeth for leading CGL's 2024 Gingerbread City Team - you can visit the display at the Museum of Architecture (London, W8) this month.

Our Thinking: The UK is home to thousands of disused industrial buildings, each a testament to its rich industrial heritage. Recent estimates show that over 86 sites have been added to the Buildings at Risk register in 2024 alone, highlighting the precarious future of many of these structures. From textile mills to iconic cooling towers, these buildings were integral to the Industrial Revolution and our broader productive heritage.

Despite their architectural resilience and historical importance, such structures are often deemed obsolete, facing demolition instead of reinvention.

Our Vision: From Obsolescence to Opportunity: Our exhibition piece addresses this critical issue by demonstrating the potential of repurposing disused industrial spaces. By carefully defining new uses through innovative programming, we can minimize interventions, reduce costs, and unlock viable solutions for reusing these structures, preserving both their legacy and our environment.
