CGL welcomes report on housing for the older generation by Future of London

22.03.2018

This week, Future of London issued a report on housing for the older generation titled ‘Are we ready for the boom? Housing older Londoners'.

Endorsed by project partners Arup, Barton Willmore, British Land and Pollard Thomas Edwards, this report looks at one of the fastest-growing UK demographics and what needs to change in order to improve their standard of living. It touched on three key areas; planning and policy, housing, and creating neighbourhoods.

David Marsh, associate at CGL, said: ‘We welcome Future of London’s ‘Are we ready for the boom? Housing older Londoners’ report and, in particular, the call for planning policy and tax reform to help bring urgent clarity and incentive for developers in this vital sector.

Developing large numbers of innovative and genuinely appealing housing typologies, designed specifically to meet the needs and aspirations of our ageing population, is key to helping solve the wider housing crisis. This could potentially allow millions of over 55s to choose to move to attractive, right-size, amenity-focussed accommodation and in so doing, free up under-used, existing, family-sized housing stock for the future generations.

Measures such as stamp duty exemption for downsizers and a senior help-to-buy programme could make a huge impact.’
